Situated in Upper Street in (you’ve guessed it) the London borough of Islington, Islington Town Hall is an incredibly popular venue for exchanging your vows. Featuring a stunning marble staircase, a gorgeously eye-catching corridor (perfect for post-ceremony couple shots), and a façade that lends itself to fabulous confetti photographs, this listed building is always worth adding to ‘venues to visit’ list.
The central location of Islington Town Hall means it is easy to access by road, tube or bus and therefore also really easy to depart from to head to your reception location. Many couples who have chosen to get married at Islington Town Hall have opted to hire a London wedding bus to collect them from the venue and there’s always a party vibe, and plenty of Prosecco flowing as the Town Hall fades from view and the newly married couple look ahead to the rest of the day’s celebrations.
There is a choice 5 rooms available to hold your ceremony in and your choice of room will impact the day(s) on which you can get married.
The Council Chamber is the largest ceremony room and with its vaulted ceiling and stained-glass windows, it is arguably the most photogenic. The horseshoe layout of the fixed seating maintains an intimate feeling to your ceremony and no guest will ever be more than 5 rows from the proceedings. You are allowed to have personalised vows and readings during your Council Chamber ceremony. This room is available on Tuesdays-Saturdays and selected Sundays.
As of January 2023, you can book the Mayor’s Parlour which is the smallest room available. Oak panelled and featuring red leather finishings, you can hold your ceremony (including personalised vows and readings) in front of the beautiful fireplace. The Mayor’s Parlour is available on Fridays and Saturdays.
The Richmond Suite is an art deco room that is less formal than The Council Chamber. It can be hired for you ceremony on Saturdays from April 2023 (excluding the 2nd Saturday of each month). It is oak-panelled and features and stunning fireplace.
If you are looking for a ceremony that is a little lighter and airier, Room 99 might be your preferred choice. Restored in 2022, the large windows bring in lots of natural light and three Italian chandeliers provide even more light when needed. The room also ‘features parquet floors, and a beautiful oak mantelpiece and circular mirror as a focal point.’
The 5th room available at Islington Town Hall is solely for residents of Islington and the City of London and can only be booked on a Monday morning. The most basic of ceremonies take place in the Statutory Room and no personalisation of vows or readings are permitted.
Very few ceremony-only venues offer the choice of rooms that Islington Town Hall can offer. The ability to also tailor your ceremony and make your vows your own is also a huge feature here. I’ve shot several weddings at Islington Town Hall and have always found the registrars to be friendly, accommodating and with a good sense of humour. I always sneak couples off to the corridor immediately after the ceremony and in addition to amazing images, it also provides a good opportunity to breathe and take 5 minutes to yourselves to enjoy that newly married feeling.
Whilst booking Islington Town Hall means you still need to book another venue for your wedding breakfast and/or reception, this provides you with a huge number of options. There are so many great places to eat and party in London that are not licenced for ceremonies which you otherwise might have overlooked.
