As a Hylands House wedding photographer, I knew straightaway that this was the perfect venue for this styled shoot that celebrated the story of a vintage wedding dress. This bridal shoot brought together everything I love about wedding photography – a gorgeous Essex wedding venue, a gorgeous bride, and a dress with decades of history woven into its fabric. What began as a creative idea became a tribute to my late mother-in-law and a celebration of her style and marriage.
While sorting through my late mother-in-law’s belongings, we found her wedding dress folded carefully among her things. It was a 1950s/60s hand-crafted outfit with beautiful details; long sleeves, a structured bodice and a statement bow at the back. Up close, you can see subtle irises woven into the dress pattern – a lovely nod to her name.
It felt right to bring the dress back to life at Hylands House. It fitted our beautiful model Yasmin perfectly and I was blown away by how gorgeous she looked in it. Within the elegant rooms of Hylands House, I photographed the dress in various light and backdrops to capture it in all its glory. The advantage of being a Hylands House wedding photographer meant that I knew exactly where to shoot around this popular Chelmsford wedding venue.
As a Hylands House wedding photographer, I’m always drawn to the venue’s natural light and historic design. It offers a refined aesthetic without feeling overly formal. Here are a few things that make Hylands House so special:
Beautifully lit interiors
Tall sash windows, soft Georgian tones and expansive rooms create clean, flattering light throughout the day. The White Room is especially serene – bright, calm and perfect for portraits. The Marble Hall adds grandeur but is not too overpowering that it takes the focus away from the couple.
Expansive grounds
The surrounding gardens offer long views, symmetry and a mix of tones and textures which are wonderful for relaxed outdoor portraits with movement and space to relax into the shoot.
A versatile venue for Essex and London couples
Located just outside Chelmsford, Hylands House is easy to reach from London and perfectly placed for Essex weddings. For couples wanting a venue that’s elegant, accessible and full of character, it’s an ideal choice.
A timeless aesthetic
The architecture and interiors carry a quiet sophistication that suits a natural, refined photographic style.
For this shoot, the goal was to celebrate the dress and highlight the beauty of Hylands House.
Whether I’m working on a styled shoot or a real wedding day, my approach stays the same:
Gentle, supportive direction (never stiff posing)
A focus on comfort and confidence
Space for natural expression
Honest moments over trends
Images that feel elegant, refined and true to the you
Hylands House lends itself beautifully to this style. Its light, architecture and atmosphere work together to support natural, effortless photographs.
